Networking Signal (networkingsignal.com) is a networking education website published by Jaspreet Singh and Gurpreet Singh. This privacy policy explains what information we collect when you visit the site, why we collect it, who we share it with, and the choices you have. If anything here is unclear, please write to us at [email protected] or use our contact page.
Who we are
Networking Signal is an independent publication. We write tutorials, explainers and product guides about routing, switching, wireless, network security, cabling, cloud networking and home and office networks. We do not sell software, hardware or subscriptions, and we do not operate a shop. We earn money from display advertising and from affiliate commissions, both of which are described below.
Our registered contact address for privacy matters is the email address above. We aim to answer every privacy request within seven working days.
Information we collect
Information you give us
You can read every article on this site without giving us anything. We only receive personal information when you choose to send it:
- Email. If you write to us, we receive your email address, your name if you include it, and whatever is in your message. We keep that correspondence so we can answer follow up questions.
- Comments. If commenting is open on an article and you leave a comment, WordPress stores the name, email address and website you type into the comment form, along with your IP address and browser user agent string. This helps us detect spam. Comment data is kept indefinitely so that follow up comments can be recognised and approved automatically instead of being held in a queue.
- Contributor submissions. If you pitch an article through our Write For Us page, we keep your pitch, your draft and your contact details for as long as the working relationship lasts.
Information collected automatically
Like almost every website, our server writes a log entry for each request. Those entries record the internet protocol (IP) address, browser type and version, internet service provider, date and time stamp, the page requested, and the referring page. We use log data to understand traffic patterns, to diagnose errors and to investigate abuse. Log data is not linked to any information that identifies you personally.
Our host and our content delivery layer may also record this information for security and performance reasons.
Cookies
A cookie is a small text file that a website asks your browser to store. We and our partners use cookies for four purposes:
- Strictly necessary cookies keep the site working. WordPress sets these when you leave a comment or log in.
- Preference cookies remember choices such as a collapsed table of contents.
- Analytics cookies tell us which articles are read and how people arrive, in aggregate.
- Advertising cookies are set by our advertising partners to select and measure the adverts you see.
You can refuse or delete cookies through your browser settings at any time. Every major browser has a privacy or settings screen for this. Blocking strictly necessary cookies may stop parts of the site working. Our full cookie policy lists the categories in more detail.
Google AdSense and advertising
We serve display advertising through Google AdSense. The following disclosures are required by Google and we want you to have them in plain language:
- Third party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve adverts based on your prior visits to this website or to other websites.
- Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve adverts to you based on your visit to our site and other sites on the internet.
- Google uses the DoubleClick DART cookie to serve adverts to our visitors based on their visit to our site and other sites on the internet.
- You may opt out of personalised advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings.
- You may opt out of a third party vendor’s use of cookies for personalised advertising by visiting aboutads.info or Your Online Choices in Europe.
Opting out of personalised advertising does not remove adverts. It means the adverts you see are chosen without using your browsing history.
We do not control the cookies set by advertising partners and we cannot read them. If you want to know exactly how a given partner handles your data, read that partner’s own privacy policy. Google’s is published at policies.google.com/technologies/ads.
Analytics
We use Google Analytics to count visits and understand which articles are useful. Google Analytics sets cookies and processes your IP address in order to do this. We have no interest in identifying individual readers and we do not attempt to. You can prevent Google Analytics from collecting your activity by installing the Google Analytics opt out browser add on.
We also use Google Search Console, which reports the search queries that led people to our pages. Search Console data is aggregated and never identifies an individual.
Affiliate links
Networking Signal is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program and in other affiliate programmes. When an article recommends a router, switch, cable or other product, the link to the retailer may carry a tracking identifier. If you buy something after following that link, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.
Following an affiliate link means the retailer can set its own cookies and can see that you arrived from our site. What the retailer then does with that information is governed by the retailer’s privacy policy, not ours. Our full affiliate disclosure explains how these links affect what we recommend, which is to say they do not.
Security and spam filtering
We run Wordfence to protect the site from attack. Wordfence inspects request data, including IP addresses, in order to block malicious traffic. We run Akismet to filter comment spam, which means comment content and the commenter’s IP address are sent to Akismet for a spam verdict.
How long we keep information
- Server logs are kept for a short rolling window by our host and then discarded.
- Comments and their metadata are kept indefinitely unless you ask us to remove them.
- Email correspondence is kept for as long as it is useful for answering you, and then deleted.
- Analytics data is retained according to the retention period set in Google Analytics.
Your rights under the GDPR
If you are in the United Kingdom or the European Economic Area, you have the right to ask us for a copy of the personal data we hold about you, to have it corrected, to have it erased, to restrict how we process it, to object to processing, and to receive it in a portable format. Where we rely on consent, you may withdraw that consent at any time.
To exercise any of these rights, email [email protected] with the request and enough detail for us to find your data. We do not charge for this. You also have the right to complain to your national data protection authority.
Your rights under the CCPA
If you are a California resident, you have the right to know what categories of personal information we collect and the purposes for which they are used, the right to request deletion of personal information we hold about you, and the right to opt out of the sale of personal information.
We do not sell personal information. To make a request under the CCPA, email us at the address above.
Children
Networking Signal is written for a technical adult audience. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under the age of 13, and no part of this site is directed at children. If you are a parent or guardian and you believe your child has given us personal information, contact us and we will delete it promptly.
Links to other websites
Our articles link to manufacturer documentation, standards bodies, retailers and other resources. Once you follow a link away from networkingsignal.com you are on someone else’s website and this policy no longer applies. We encourage you to read the privacy policy of every site you visit.
Changes to this policy
We update this policy when our practices change or when the law changes. The date at the top always shows the most recent revision. Continuing to use the site after a change means you accept the revised policy.
Contact
Questions, requests and complaints about privacy should go to [email protected], or through our contact page. We answer every message.
