The short version
Some links on this site earn us money. If you click one and buy something, we may receive a commission from the retailer. You never pay more because of it. The price you see is the price you would have paid arriving any other way.
This never changes what we recommend. If the cheaper product is the better product, we say so, even when the expensive one pays more.

We also take part in other affiliate programmes from time to time, including retailer and manufacturer programmes. The same rules on this page apply to all of them.
How an affiliate link actually works
An affiliate link is an ordinary link with a tracking identifier attached. When you click it, the retailer sets a cookie that records that you arrived from us. If you buy within that cookie’s lifetime, the retailer credits the sale and pays us a small percentage.
Three things follow from that, and they are worth knowing:
- The commission comes out of the retailer’s margin. It is not added to your price.
- The cookie is set by the retailer, not by us, and is governed by the retailer’s own policy. We never see your order, your payment details or your address.
- The cookie is set when you click, not when you read. Reading an article without clicking a product link sets nothing.
Where these links appear
Affiliate links appear in buying guides, product comparisons and roundups, and occasionally in a troubleshooting article where replacing a part is the actual fix. They are always links to a retailer’s product page.
Not every outbound link is an affiliate link. Links to standards documents, vendor documentation, manufacturer support pages and other publications earn us nothing and exist purely because they are useful.
How we choose what to recommend
This is the part that matters, because a disclosure without it is just paperwork.
- We pick the product first and check the commission never. Selection happens on specification, on measured or documented performance, on reliability history and on price for what you get.
- We recommend products that pay us nothing when they are the right answer, including buying nothing at all. A large number of our troubleshooting guides end with a free fix and no product link.
- We say when a product is a bad buy, including products we could earn a commission on.
- We say when the cheap option is enough. Most home networks do not need the flagship, and a guide that pretends otherwise is selling, not advising.
- No manufacturer can buy a place in a list. We do not accept payment for coverage, for a review, for placement or for a link. See our editorial policy.
Prices and availability
Prices shown on this site were correct when the article was written or last updated, and they change constantly. Always check the current price and the exact model number on the retailer’s page before you buy. We are not the seller and we do not control pricing, stock or delivery.
Returns and problems with an order
We are not the seller, so we cannot process a return, a refund, a cancellation or a warranty claim. Those go to the retailer you bought from. Our returns and refunds page explains this in full.
If a product we recommended turned out to be wrong for the use case we described, please tell us. That is an editorial problem and we will fix the article.
Advertising is separate
Alongside affiliate links, this site carries display advertising served by Google AdSense. Those adverts are selected by Google, not by us. An advert appearing next to an article is not a recommendation from Networking Signal and has nothing to do with our editorial choices. Why we do it this way
Affiliate income and advertising are what keep this site free, with no paywall, no subscription and no email wall in front of the tools. We would rather disclose exactly how that works than pretend the site funds itself.
