Your network is not our network
This is the disclaimer that matters most on a networking site. A command, configuration or setting that is correct in one environment can be wrong or actively harmful in another. Outcomes depend on your hardware model, your firmware or software version, your topology, your addressing plan, your security policy and your service provider.
Before applying anything from this site to a network you care about:
- Understand what the change does before you make it, not after.
- Take a configuration backup and know how to roll it back.
- Test in a lab or a maintenance window rather than in production at peak time.
- Remember that a change made over the network can lock you out of the device making it.
We are not liable for downtime, data loss, lost configuration, hardware damage, security exposure or business loss arising from something you read here.
Security content
Some of our articles explain how protocols can be observed, spoofed or abused. This material is published so that people who run networks can defend them, and so that students can understand what the attack actually is. It is not published so that anyone can attack a network.
Only use these techniques on equipment you own or on a network where you have explicit written authorisation to test. Unauthorised access to a computer network is a criminal offence in most countries. Responsibility for what you do with this information is entirely yours.
Product recommendations
When we recommend hardware, we are giving an informed opinion based on specifications, vendor documentation, published testing and our own experience. We are not an independent test laboratory and we do not claim laboratory conditions.
The right product depends on your circumstances. A router that is an excellent choice for a two bedroom flat may be a poor choice for a house with thick walls, and the reverse is also true. Read the reasoning in the article rather than only the verdict.
Prices, availability and specifications
Prices and availability change constantly and are not controlled by us. Any price mentioned in an article was correct when it was written and may be wrong by the time you read it. Always confirm the current price, the exact model number and the current specification on the retailer’s own page before you buy.
Manufacturers revise products without renaming them. A unit shipping today may differ from the one a review was based on.
