Your WiFi Speed Is Not Your Internet Speed

This is the single most misunderstood thing about speed tests. A test run on a laptop over Wi-Fi measures the slowest link in the whole chain, and that link is almost never your internet plan. It is usually the Wi-Fi hop between your device and the router.

If you pay for 500 Mbps and your laptop reports 90 Mbps in the bedroom, your ISP is probably delivering exactly what you bought. The 410 Mbps disappeared somewhere between the router and your device.

How to Test Your Speed Properly

  1. Test over a cable first. Plug a laptop into the router with Ethernet and run the test. This is your true line speed, everything else is a Wi-Fi measurement. If the cabled result matches your plan, the internet is fine.
  2. Then test over Wi-Fi, next to the router. The gap between this and the cabled figure is what your router’s radio is costing you.
  3. Then test where you actually use the device. The gap between this and the previous test is what walls, distance and interference are costing you.
  4. Stop other traffic first. A single 4K stream or a cloud backup running in the background will skew every number.
  5. Test more than once. Run it three times at different points in the day. Evening congestion on a shared cable connection is real and shows up between roughly 7pm and 11pm.
  6. Note the ping and jitter, not just the download. For calls and gaming these matter far more than raw Mbps.

Why Your WiFi Speed Is Lower Than You Pay For

  • Distance and walls. The 5 GHz band is much faster than 2.4 GHz but far worse at passing through brick and concrete. Move one room away and speeds can halve.
  • An older router. A Wi-Fi 4 (802.11n) router physically cannot deliver 500 Mbps no matter what plan you buy. Wi-Fi 5 realistically delivers 200 to 400 Mbps to a good client; Wi-Fi 6 goes higher.
  • Channel congestion. In a flat or apartment block, dozens of neighbouring networks share the same 2.4 GHz channels. Switching to 5 GHz usually fixes it instantly.
  • The client device. An old phone with a single-antenna Wi-Fi chip will never match a modern laptop on the same network.
  • The connection type. Shared cable connections slow down at peak hours; fibre generally does not.
  • The router itself is the bottleneck. Some ISP-supplied routers cannot route at gigabit speeds even over Ethernet.

Download vs Upload, Check Both

Most consumer plans are asymmetric: 500 Mbps down and 20 Mbps up is common. Downloads and streaming only use the download side, so people rarely notice. But video calls, cloud backup, uploading footage and remote desktop all lean on upload. If your meetings freeze while downloads work perfectly, upload saturation is almost always the cause.

Does an Ethernet cable actually make a difference?
