Most fibre providers are straightforward. Google Fiber, Verizon Fios on the Ethernet handoff, Frontier and most municipal networks let you connect any router directly to the ONT and get an address by DHCP. In those cases you unplug their router and plug in yours.
Watch for the TV caveat. If you take television service over the same fibre, the ISP router often handles it with multicast routing that a retail router does not replicate.
